Fish oil has long been known for its high nutrient content and its benefits to human health, but very few people have the opportunity to access it because it is usually extracted in the form of soft capsules and it is quite expensive. The advent of Ranee high-grade fish oil gives consumers a new choice of supplemental nutrients for their daily diet. From the preoccupation with tra fish
Tra fish, or pangasius, has been long known as a precious species that nature bestows on the Mekong Delta. It is even compared to a treasure of this land.
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in 2013, Vietnam’s pangasius production output reached 1.15 million tonnes, primarily cultured in An Giang, Dong Thap, Can Tho and Vinh Long provinces. Pangasius products, mainly processed into fillets, are exported almost all over the world, including European markets, the United States and ASEAN.
Le Thanh Thuan, President and CEO of Sao Mai An Giang Group, soon realised the potential of tra fish. Hence, right in 2008 when the economy slid into recession, he decided to invest tens of millions of US dollars to build IDI export seafood processing plant in Vam Cong Industrial Park, Dong Thap province, with the first-phase processing capacity of 180 tonnes a day. After six years, IDI quickly emerged to assert itself with a Top 5 position in pangasius export revenue in Vietnam. Remarkably, the processing factory generated jobs for thousands of local people and built up business relations between pangasius farmers and the company.
However, Mr Thuan is always concerned about raising the value for tra fish because he still sees that many farmers are living in difficulty. After running the IDI plant, he sees that most parts of tra fish are usable and useful. But, only fillets are taken and the rest is thrown away or ineffectively used. For example, after processing fillets, a lot of fish fat rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and other natural vitamins needed for human health is left behind. “With an annual output of 1.1 million tonnes of tra fish, the Mekong Delta region can collect no less than 140,000 tonnes of fish oil which is mainly used as inputs for biodiesel production or crude export at low prices. Meanwhile, Vietnam is spending billions of US dollars every year to import vegetable oil and this demand is on the rise,” he said.
Although fish oil is very good for human health, the prudence in business is never redundant. So, before embarking on the construction of fish oil refining facility, he spent a lot of time studying and searching information related to fish oil and he finally approached a valuable research on fish oil’s effects on human health from the National Institute of Nutrition under the Ministry of Health. The research theme shows that fish oil is a nutrient-rich product good for health and Ranee fish oil plant was built afterwards.
Fish oil is a key link in the closed tra and basa catfish production and processing process for export. Ranee premium fish oil is the answer to increased added value for Vietnamese tra fish that Sao Mai An Giang Group is taking the lead.
…to unprecedented fish oil brand
The fish oil plant was built on 4 ha in Vam Cong Industrial Complex, Dong Thap province, also invested by Sao Mai An Giang Group. Costing VND500 billion, the plant is furnished with modern equipment imported from Europe. Its fish oil output meets international Food Safety Management System (FSSC) standards. While the fishy smell is removed, Omega nutrients ad natural Vitamin E are maintained.
Ranee premium fish oil has been marketed for more than one month. The time is not long enough to make an assertion of a new brand name, but it has drawn much interest from consumers because it is a unique product. Many consumers said that they do not know much about refined edible oil made from fish fat like Ranee but they trust in this product because it is scientifically proven to be good to human health.
Ranee fish oil is now being sold in Mekong Delta provinces like An Giang, Can Tho and Dong Thap. The product is always sold out.
Tran Bich Phuong, a chef at a well-known restaurant in Can Tho City, said she knows a lot about the benefits of fish oil to human health, but she has never seen fish oil used for daily cooking as now. “As I understand very clearly the nutrition of fish oil, I am eager to buy Ranee fish oil as soon as it is on the market. Personally, I see that this delicious product is very good to our health, to our digestive system,” she said.
According to fact sheets from the National Institute of Nutrition, fish fat or crude fish oil contains no cholesterol but contains many valuable, good-to-health nutrients such as monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, mineral elements and Vitamin E. Especially, fish oil contains EPA and DHA – very important elements for human health.
Dr Truong Tuyet Mai from the National Institute of Nutrition said research proves that fish oil helps enhance memory and concentration. Fish oil is also very good for pregnant women and young children as it helps improve intelligence. Omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil helps reduce inflammation and pain while DHA protects the eyes and prevents some types of cancer such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer and colorectal cancer.
Mr Le Danh Tuyen, Director of the National Institute of Health, appreciated Ranee fish oil and spoke highly of its export prospects in the near future.
CEO Le Thanh Thuan said, “Profit is the eventual target of any business, but Sao Mai An Giang Group is proud of making profit from the products and activities that bring huge benefits for the community, and Ranee fish oil is a typical example of the group.”
