PANO – The Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence on December 13th organized solemnly a meeting under the chair of Minister of National Defence General Phung Quang Thanh and in the presence of more than 600 generals, retired senior military officials, heroes of the People’s Armed Forces in Military Zones 7 and 9.

The get-together is in celebration of the 70th founding anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) and the 25th anniversary of the Whole People Defence Festival on December 22nd.


Before the meeting started, the minister inquired after and presented gifts to elderly To Dinh Cam, the only alive member of the 34 soldiers of the Armed Propaganda Unit for National Liberation, the VPA’s predecessor, at the Military Zone 7 Command’s guest house.


To Dinh Cam is now 93 years old and in poor health condition though he can sometimes listen to radio and watch TV. Having 7 children, the elderly now lives at Village 8B, Da Teh town, Da Teh district, Lam Dong province.


On the occasion of the VPA’s 70th founding anniversary, the minister wished elderly Cam longevity and happiness.

At the meeting, the minister highlighted the meeting which aims to express deep gratitude to and honor older generations and to promote pride and Uncle Ho’s soldiers’ good virtues in contribution to building strong whole-people defence.


The minister informed the delegates about some issues at home, in the region and the rest of the world, national socio-economic development, combat readiness training, and practical activities celebrating the VPA’s founding anniversary. He also laid stress on the outcomes of the army’s missions, the army’s good staff work for the Party and the State to deal with many issues, including the East Sea developments, ensure regional peace and stability, and create favorable conditions for economic development.


Having been updated on domestic and international developments, the delegates were confident of the army’s accomplishments and showed their high sense of responsibilities.


Proud of great achievements of the VPA during its 70 years of construction, combat and growth, Lieutenant General Le Thanh Tam, Vice President of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association Central Committee and President of the Ho Chi Minh City Veterans’ Association held that he and his comrades will always preserve and promote the nature of Uncle Ho’s soldiers, be loyal to the Party, the nation and the people, and heighten the role models in movements and traditional education for younger generations.


About the meeting, Lieutenant General Pham Van Dy, Political Commissar of Military Zone 7, said it was among activities retelling the stories of 70 years ago about patriotism, the tradition of defending the country, strong will, power of spirit that Vietnamese people, with the army as a key, mobilized to liberate and defend the nation. Dy reminded younger generations to keep promoting the glorious tradition of Vietnam.


In the afternoon the same day, the minister visited and presented gifts to some retired generals and senior officials who live in Ho Chi Minh City.
