PANO – According to the Vietnam National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast Centre, on December 10th, the centre of typhoon Hagupit, the fifth storm to hit East Sea this year, was around 290km northeast of Song Tu Tay Island of Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) islands.
In the next 24 to 48 hours, the typhoon will mainly move west – southwest at the maximum speed of 20km per hour to hit Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces. Army and civilian units in the possibly-hit localities are urgently gearing up to minimize losses that the storm might cause.
Particularly, border posts of Ninh Thuan provincial Border Guard Command have mobilized forces and vehicles to help locals cope with the coming storm. It has called upon trawlers fishing offshore to take shelter. 2,730 fishing boats with 16,913 fishermen of the province were informed of the storm developments so that they could in time seek shelter. Measures to ensure safety for fishermen and their property have also been carried out.
Meanwhile, Khanh Hoa provincial Border Guard Command is working with localities and units to keep track of the developments of the storm to develop suitable measures to minimize the losses and help fishing boats, tourism vessels and fishermen working at sea when the storm comes. According to the unit, all preparations have been completed.
The National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines on December 10th announced adjustments to its flight schedule as typhoon Hagupit is forecast to hit Vietnam.
Accordingly, the airlines will cancel the flight VN1561 from Hanoi to Nha Trang and change the departure time of flights, including VN1382 from Ho Chi Minh City – Da Lat (Lam Dong), VN1383 from Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City, VN1364 from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, and VN1365 from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam Airlines said that it will keep close watch of the movement and impacts of the typhoon to adjust its flight schedule to ensure complete safety for passengers.
