The national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) on Saturday last week asked 80 of its passengers boarding a flight from Japan to Vietnam to leave their luggage at the foreign airport to ensure the safety of the flight, said VNA spokesman.

All the baggage, 177 units, were handed over to the passengers of the VND385 fight from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi on the following day, Le Truong Giang, spokesman of VNA, told Tuoi Tre.

The luggage had to be left on foreign land for one day due to regulation from Haneda Airport, he said.

According to the regulations of the authorities of Haneda Airport, VNA’s flights deploying short runways for landing and taking off must comply with maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) limit.

As flight VN385, which was filled up with passengers, had to deal with crosswind with great speed, VNA representatives decided to ask the passengers to do so to ensure sufficient fuel for the direct flight bringing them from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi.

As the Tokyo-Hanoi air route had only one flight per day, all the luggage could only be transported back home one day later, and was already handed over to all the passengers, said the VNA representative.

If Haneda Airport authorities gave the green light for VNA aircraft to use longer runway, VNA will have more room to maneuver in flexibly operating its flights from there to Noi Bai, Giang added

In case of being required to carry all passengers and luggage to Noi Bai in the condition of crosswind with great speed, VNA will adjust to the flight route for a stopover in Taipei (Taiwan) for refueling before heading home, Giang said.
