(CPV) – The goals by Vo Huy Toan and Nguyen Van Quyet on December 7th secured the 2008 champions a 2-1 away win over Malaysia in the first leg of their semi-final and take a firm grip of their AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final.

The hosts had targeted a two-goal advantage from the first leg and they were halfway there in the 13th minute after stand-in skipper Safiq Rahim confidently stroked home a penalty awarded when Nguyen Huy Hung handled. It has benefited from a superheated atmosphere by 80,000 fans at the Shah Alam stadium, west of Kuala Lumpur. He had a light shoot that came to the right corner while goalie Tran Nguyen Manh jumped to the left, his second successful penalty this Cup.

The midfielder Vo Huy Toan, 21, from Lam Dong province, who could only get in the field after first choice Vu Minh Tuan was sidelined, ran in to catch the running ball in the box and sent it to the net, rebalancing the game in the 32nd minute.

Coach Toshyia Miura said he came to Malaysia to win. And, his students realized his words. Miura changed his tactic in the second half with a surprise change, calling on super-substitute striker Mac Hong Quan to replace on-song Pham Thanh Luong. Luong, 26, was one of the best players on the Vietnamese side, connecting all lines of the visiting squad.

Vietnamese players notched a crucial second goal in the 60th minute after Van Quyet (21, born in Thach That district, Hanoi’s outskirt) received the ball on the right of the Malaysian box from Mac Hong Quan (22, Vietnamese original) and cut inside defender Zubir Azmi before bending the ball past Khairul Fahmi.

Vietnam nearly added a third when Huy Tuan just failed to make contact with Van Quyet’s cross, but Malaysia could have leveled right at the end as substitute Indra Putra Mahayuddin headed wide in stoppage time.

“I must congratulate my players for not panicking after conceding the goal although I felt that they would play better in the second half,” Vietnam’s Japanese coach Toshiya Miura happily told.

Meanwhile, Malaysian coach Dollah Salleh to reporters after the game as he does not know what happened to the players. “They were not disciplined tonight, especially our backline”.

With the away goals rule in effect, Malaysia will need to score at least twice in the return match in the “fire pan” My Dinh national stadium on December 11th to advance to the final.

In another match, the Philippines and Thailand played out a goalless draw in the other semi-final first leg in Manila./.
