— The Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee and the Vietnam Women’s Union will work together to increase the rate of women in the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels to 35 percent in the 2016-2021 tenure, according to a cooperation program recently approved by the two organizations. The program, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Program, is part of a project on enhancing women’s leadership capacity for international integration.

— Authorities in Phu Ninh District in the central province of Quang Nam have recovered the bodies of two gold miners who were buried when their illegal gold mine collapsed on Thursday afternoon.


— State and specialized agencies in the central city of Da Nang will join a meeting next Thursday to discuss whether the construction of a Tower Marina, which combines a lighthouse-like part and a resort in a 25-story building located on the riverside of the Han River, should be approved.

— Uber has pledged to assist the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport in managing the national transport system including developing applications to manage sea and river transport in the latest letter it had sent to the government body.


— The Ministry of Transport has given the green light to a project to mobilize VND43.7 trillion (US$2 billion) from external sources to invest in 41 maritime infrastructure projects in 2015-2020 in an effort to modernize the sector.


— Two-way trade between Vietnam and Mexico in 2014 is projected to top $1.8 billion, up 12 percent year on year, the Mexican Ministry of Economy has said, pending official figures. Mexico’s exports to Vietnam reached $142 million last year, up 35 percent year on year, while the North American country imported goods worth $1.68 billion from the Southeast Asian country, an increase of 13 percent over 2013.


— Over 1,000 foreign passengers, the first callers of 2015, received a warm reception with performances of traditional folk music, flowers and souvenirs, at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on January 1.


— Vietnam raked in $22.2 billion from shipments of agricultural, fishery and wooden products in 2014, the highest revenue ever, accounting for 14.8 percent of the country’s total export turnover, the Ministry and Industry and Trade said, adding that export prices of many products shrank considerably over the previous year.

— The World Heritage Site of Hoi An in central Quang Nam Province on January 1 welcomed a group of 68 Polish tourists, the first foreign visitors to the city in 2015, and greeted them with flowers and special gifts together with an art performance.


— Vietnam has come at the top of travelers’ list in 2015, according to the information recently reported by Canada’s CTV News and The Malay Mail. The report is based on rankings and suggestions by travel websites and guidebooks for this year. Other destinations on top of the list include Namibia, Panama, Nicaragua, Lithuania, and Belgium’s Mons City.
