— Vietnam and the Philippines discussed the establishment of a bilateral strategic partnership at a meeting held during a two-day visit to the Philippines by Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh starting on Thursday. The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy PM Minh and the host country’s Foreign Minister Albert F. del Rosario.

— Besides the traditional mass media, ministries and local authorities must use social media as an additional channel through which they provide the public with the government’s official information about social and economic situation as well as its policies, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said at a monthly meeting of his cabinet on Friday. He also called for more efforts to prevent the dissemination of wrong and harmful information on the Internet.
— A funeral for four military personnel who died in the crash of a UH-1 helicopter during a training flight three days ago was conducted in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday. The crash happened in the city’s Binh Chanh District at 7:23 am on January 28, killing four officials aboard the chopper, which belongs to the Air Force Regiment 917, under the Air Force Division 370 of the Vietnam Air Force and Air Defense Force.
— The number of traffic accidents and the resulting deaths and injuries in the period from December 16, 2014 to January 15, 2015 increased by 5.14 percent, 3.99 percent and 3.23 percent respectively, compared to those in the preceding 12 months, the Ministry of Public Security reported on Friday.
— Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has announced a plan to offer each poor household VND850,000 (US$39.8) as an allowance on the occasion of the coming Tet (Lunar New Year), which will fall on February 19. The city now has 29,106 poor households, and under its current poverty threshold, a resident is considered poor if his or her income is less than VND16 million ($749) per year.
— Four people died when a truck carrying five people including the driver fell into an abyss in Than Uyen District in the northern province of Lai Chau on Friday evening. On the same day, three adults died and a child was severely injured in another road accident in Krong Pak District in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.
— Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a project to build a national wildlife park in an area of 1,155 hectares in the south central province of Ninh Binh with a total cost of around VND7,368 billion (US$345 million), of which 71.2 percent will come from private investment.

— Vietnam’s exporters of suitcases and handbags earned a total export turnover of US$2.5 billion in 2014, up 31.21 percent from 2013, according to the Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso). Last year is the third consecutive year that the country has achieved such a high export growth from the two commodities, Lefaso reported.
Lifestyle
— This year’s Xuan Que Huong (Homeland Spring 2015) program, an event annually held by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for overseas Vietnamese around the world, will be conducted in Ho Chi Minh City for the first time during February 7 and 8, the ministry said on Friday, adding that about 1,500 overseas Vietnamese have registered to attend the event.

— Manchester City (M.C) will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge Stadium in a match of the 23rd round of the Premier League at 12:30 am on Sunday, February 1 (Vietnam time). Currently Chelsea has five points higher than M.C in the tournament.
