Local residents and tourists on Ly Son Island off Vietnam’s central coast will soon be able to flag down a taxi as a company said Friday it is slated to bring the first fleet of cabs there in the coming weeks.

Nine seven-seat cabs operated by Phu Hoang Co. will be in service on the island before the Lunar New Year, or Tet in Vietnamese, peaks, said Le Vinh Quang, chairman of the Da Nang-based taxi operator.

Tet falls on February 19 this year, with festive preparations beginning around one week before the date and the celebratory atmosphere lingering another week after that.

The Lunar New Year is very special in Vietnamese culture as it is an occasion when people get together with their family after a lunar year studying or working away from one another.

The drivers of the cabs will be local residents who are knowledgeable about the island’s directions and tourist attractions, Quang added.

“The number of cabs can be increased depending on the market demand on the island,” he said.

Phu Hoang Co. will be the first and only taxi operator on Ly Son, also a district administered by the central province of Quang Ngai.

The chairman said profit is not the top priority in his move to enter the island market.

“Our main purpose is to show our love for the country and its islands and seas, and affirm our national sovereignty,” he said.

About 30km off central Quang Ngai Province, Ly Son has emerged as a new destination for holidaymakers who love to explore seas and islands.

The island is embracing a new wave of holidaymakers and investors after an underground cable system connecting it to the national electricity grid was inaugurated in October last year.
