Ho Chi Minh City authorities have recently felled many of more than 100 trees in areas near Tan Son Nhat International Airport to be chopped down as part of a project to upgrade sidewalks around the facility.

The cutting work has been carried out over the past several days outside of the Hoang Van Thu Park and along Phan Thuc Duyen and Truong Son Streets in Tan Binh District.

On Monday, construction workers began their upgrading work in the areas where the trees had been cut down.

The lopped trees are among a total of 116 to be cut down for the sake of the project, according to the city’s Urban Traffic Management Zone No. 1, which is licensed to chop down these trees.

The said project is also aimed at improving the green space on the sidewalks of the streets near the airport.

The felled trees, mainly điệp (Caesalpinia ferrea) and viết (Mimusops elengi), will be replaced with other plant species, the cutter said.

Many trees have been cut down in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the name of infrastructural development.

In early July 2014, 298 large trees on major streets in Hanoi such as Thai Ha, Lang and Nguyen Trai were logged.

They were among the 550 trees, including a number of century-old ones, on several major roads in the capital city to be chopped down, according to the state-owned Hanoi Park and Green Tree Company.

They were felled to make way for the construction of seven train stations as part of the Cat Linh-Ha Dong railway.

On October 2, 2014, the Park and Green Tree Company in Ho Chi Minh City lopped many century-old trees on Nguyen Hue Street in District 1, as part of the site clearance for a metro line project.

Due to the project, many other age-old trees, named xà cừ (Khaya senegalensis), were also chopped down on Ton Duc Thang Street in the same district.
