Napolitano, said that he would like to resign because of age-related health problems. He had been widely expected to step down after the end of Italy’s six-month presidency of the European Union, as he had himself stated in December last year.

Greeting appreciative crowds in front of the Presidential Palace he said “I’m happy to go back home”.

The Italian President plays little part in day-to-day politics, but has the powers to choose a prime minister and dissolve parliament, which became crucial in the past few years when a divided parliament struggled to agree on a government.

First elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1953, he took an assiduous interest in parliamentary life, and was President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1992 to 1994. He was Minister of the Interior from 1996 to 1998 under Romano Prodi.

After being made a Senator for life in 2005 by then President, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Napolitano was elected to the Presidency in 2006./.
