Malaysia has set a list of eight priority action areas as the 2015 chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), announced the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat (AMNS) on January 21.
The eight priorities are the official formation of a strong ASEAN community; building a post-2015 vision with related guidelines and documents; steering ASEAN closer to the people, developing small- and medium-sized enterprises, expanding intra-ASEAN trade and investment, strengthening ASEAN institutions, promoting regional peace and security, and enhancing the association’s role as a global player.
Malaysia has chosen the theme “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision” to drive the 2015 agenda, reflecting its vision of a “people-centred ASEAN” throughout the chairmanship year, AMNS Deputy Director General Zamruni Khalid said.
The new ASEAN 2015 logo was also launched consisting of a design with ten curves forming a ring to represent the people of the 10 member states working together in friendship and harmony to achieve a shared vision.
The colour red was selected as an embodiment of the fearless character of the member states, with yellow to reflect prosperity, blue to represent peace and stability, green for friendliness, and purple for wealth, wisdom and intelligence.
The same day, the AMNS updated its preparation for ASEAN events scheduled throughout 2015, including the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Retreat in January, the 21st ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting Retreat in March, the 26th and 27th ASEAN Summit in April and November, and the 48th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in August.
Founded in August 1967, the ASEAN currently consists of 10 member countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
