The first group of students being sponsored by the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan to undertake short-term study in Viet Nam this year has arrived in Ha Noi.
Australian Ambassador Hugh Borrowman (the tallest in the middle) poses for a photo with the first group of New Colombo Plan students and staff from Swinburne University, and teachers and students of the Ha Noi University of Business and Technology who facilitated the study tour for the Swinburne students.
More than 160 Australian students will study in Viet Nam in 2015 under the new programme.
The students from the Swinburne School of Design will spend three weeks travelling and studying in Ha Noi, HCM City and some neighbouring provinces from January 5 to 23, 2015.
With support from the Ha Noi University of Business and Technology and the Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture, the students will have the opportunity to learn about Vietnamese culture and design by visiting some typical examples of local architecture and interior design, including the old quarter of Ha Noi, the French quarter and new urban areas.
The New Colombo Plan is a $100-million initiative to increase the number of Australians studying part of their degree in the region, to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Asia and build people-to-people ties.
“This is the first year of implementing the New Colombo Plan in Viet Nam. So the high level of interest shown by Australian universities and their students in coming to Viet Nam, as well as by Vietnamese universities in hosting the students, is very encouraging,” said Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam Hugh Borrowman.
“Almost every day I meet Vietnamese Australian Alumni who tell me about the profound impact their study experience in Australia has had on their lives and careers. So I strongly believe this programme for Australian students will also create bonds of friendship between our people and open doors for further communication, partnerships and trade between Australia and Viet Nam,” he added.
The implementation of the New Colombo Plan in Viet Nam is also expected to help internationalise the experience for local Vietnamese students at the host universities.
