Two leading Ebola vaccines to be tested in West Africa

The Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Marie-Paule Kienyhas said testing of two leading Ebola vaccines in West Africa will be started as early as January 2015.

Two vaccines have already passed preliminary safety trials, one from GlaxoSmithKline and the second being developed by New Link Genetics. The next step is to find out whether either or both will actually protect people from this deadly disease.


“The evaluation of two vaccines is taking place in a number of countries in Europe, the US, Canada, Kenya, Gabon and Mali for safety and efficacy. If initial results are promising, testing in West Africa could start as early as January 2015″, WHO reported.


“This is really good news”, Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny said, adding that it would be used on thousands of people.


The testing which consists of giving the vaccine to healthy volunteers in affected areas including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.


On January 6th, US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson said that it had started human trials on a possible vaccine against Ebola.


WHO said on January 12th that at least 8,371 people had died from more than 21,170 reported cases of infection in this latest outbreak.


New figures showed the recorded death toll in the three countries hit hardest by the outbreak including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea./.
