Thai cabinet to give assistance to drought-hit farming communities

The Thai Cabinet has endorsed an income boosting programme to help farmers who have been unable to grow crops due to water shortages, said Deputy Director General Surapol Jarupong of the Department of Agricultural Extension.


The department unveiled drought crisis has put farmers out of jobs in 58 provinces nationwide.


More than 3,000 districts have been hit by the drought. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense have been entrusted by the Cabinet to jointly implement the program to help increase farm productivity.


Under the programme, each district will receive a one-million baht fund.


Farmers are required to propose a sustainable plan that meets the four following criteria in order to obtain the fund.


They include water management, promoting the production and sales of processed farm products, increasing the production efficiency and mitigating productivity loss.-VNA
