Traffic accidents across Vietnam killed 33 people and injured 26 others yesterday, the latest report from the National Traffic Safety Committee has revealed.

The number of deaths was 9 times higher than yesterday, reflecting a remarkable rise in the toll, compared with yesterday, the committee pointed out.
According to the committee, 84 people were killed and 105 others were injured, owing to traffic accidents during the first three days of the Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays alone.
On February 17 only, the traffic police dealt with over 4,800 cases of traffic rules violations, imposing fines of up to VND1.3 billion (US$60,900).
Hot lines installed at the committee received 163 complaints today about coaches carrying an excessive number of passengers than permitted. Most of the complaints were found to be true, the committee said.
To reduce the number of traffic accidents occurring during Tet, the committee had requested the public to obey traffic rules, wear helmets, and to refrain from driving in an inebriated condition.
