Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia Yuji Kumamaru and Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong on March 30th signed agreements providing Cambodia with USD230 million for social and economic development projects. (Source: nationalgeographic.com) The projects include the upgrading of traffic signal system and building traffic management systems with Internet traffic in Phnom Penh capital; improving the infrastructure and equipment for Svay Rieng provincial referral hospital; and constructing and rehabilitating a small hydropower plant in Ratanakkiri province. Japan will also provide a concessional loan of almost USD193 million for two projects, including phase two of the expansion of Phnom Penh’s electrical transmission and distribution system and upgrades to National Road 5 between Battambang and Banteay Meanchey provinces. The Japanese Government established a USD6.2 billion ASEAN economic integration program that directly funds Cambodian infrastructure projects. Japanese development assistance in Cambodia mainly focuses on the health, education and transport, sectors as well as infrastructure and human resource development. Japan is one of the leading nations in providing aid, as well as one of the largest foreign investors in this Southeast Asian nation./. |
