The 2014 Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa is the longest, largest, deadliest, and the most complex in history, says the latest report by the UN Development Group on the socioeconomic impact of Ebola in the African sub-region.

The WHO’s Director for Africa, Matshidiso Rebcca Moeti said that Ebola’s huge and varied negative impacts on the hardest hit countries: Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. These countries are determined to eradicate the Ebola epidemic so continued world support was essential.

On March 28th, Guinean President Alpha Conde announced new emergency measures enabling authorities to restrict movements in five of the country’s prefectures after new cases of Ebola were detected.

Mr Conde said he was declaring “a reinforced health emergency for a period of 45 days in the prefectures of Forecariah, Coyah, Dubreka, Boffa and Kindia” in a statement published in national media.

Sierra Leone, which has seen the most cases, imposed a three-day lockdown that officials hoped would help the country achieve “total control” over any further spread of the virus. The lockdown was concluded on March 29th.

The WHO confimed that the number of deaths caused by the Ebola virus has reached over 10,300 from more than 24,500 cases of infection./.
