Traffic police in HCM City’s District 7 have been equipped with helmet cameras to enhance gathering evidence of traffic violations.

The cameras have an effective range of tens of metres and are controlled by a wrist device. At the end of each shift, the officer saves the recording on computer.

Pham Hong Nam, an officer with the traffic police team of District 7, said the camera is useful when dealing with drivers who have been drinking.

“Since we’ve been using the cameras, it is much easier for us to detect and deal with violations in which drivers have been drinking,” Nam said. “We just show the images as proof, and don’t have to argue with offenders.”

He said the tool helps the traffic police pay more attention to their working manner on duty.

“For cases when traffic police stop vehicles for violations, but ignore the mistake, they will be also strictly fined,” Nam said.

However, one shortcoming of the cameras is the low battery life — it can run continuously for only two hours, half the street-duty shift of traffic police.
