 German writer, Gunter Grass. (Source: Telegraph) On April 13th, German writer, Gunter Grass who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, has died aged 87 in the German city of Lubeck. Gunter Grass was a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Prize-winning novelist emerged as one of Germany’s most important post-World War II writers following the 1959 publication of his first novel, “The Tin Drum,” which the Nobel committee later called a “rebirth of the German novel in the 20th century”. Awarding the Nobel in 1999, the Swedish Academy said “The Tin Drum” tackled “the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, the losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them”. Born in 1927 in Danzig (now the Polish city of Gdansk), Grass published more than 30 novels, books of poetry and essays, and plays. He’s survived by second wife, Ute Grunert, four children, two step-sons, and 18 grandkids./. |
