Police in Ho Chi Minh City arrested 124 people for investigation into gambling on illegal cockfighting in Binh Chanh District on Tuesday.
The arrests were made when about 100 criminal policemen raided a cockfighting field in Tan Nhat Commune yesterday afternoon.
Of the arrested, seven are believed to be the organizers of the cockfighting, said Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Quy, deputy chief of police of the district.
They include Cao Hoang Quan, 23, Cao Van Gam, 24, Cao Duy Thanh, 22, Le Duc Thong, 31, Le Thanh Nhan, 47, Nguyen Thanh Van, 35, and Le Van Quang, 48.
The police also seized 8 fighting cocks, 10 pairs of metal cock spurs, a scale, 62 mobile phones, 60 motorbikes and VND100 million (US$4,800) in cash.
Many of the arrested people have previous criminal convictions. One of them is Nguyen Hoang Muon, a 26-year-old man from southern Vinh Long Province, who was wanted by Binh Chanh police on robbery charges.
After being questioned, Quan admitted to police that he led the six-member group that organized the illegal fights and charged cock-fighters 10 percent of their bets.
The gang also forced the winners to pay them the protection and security fees.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
