The campaign is organised by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) in coordination of the Health Ministry and the National Steering Committee of Voluntary Blood Donation.
The humanitarian activity is part of the Red Journey programme, to help improve public awareness of blood donation and call for people’s support for patients of thalassemia, a blood disorder caused by variant or missing genes that affect how the body makes hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Vietnam is at high risk of the disease, with more than 5 million people genetically at risk, including more than 20,000 sufferers in need of treatment and 2,000 new-born babies with thalassemia each year.
Previously, a campaign themed “Connecting Hearts” was also held in Danang as fund raiser for thalassemia patients.
Danang is one of the localities having the highest number of blood donors in the country, accouting for around 3 percent of national population.
