Can Tho city strives to eliminate HIV/AIDS

VGP – The Southern city of Can Tho has taken part in a project to terminate new HIV infections, deaths due to AIDS, and HIV/AIDS-related discrimination under the supervision of the United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in Viet Nam and the Viet Nam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) under the Ministry of Health.


The VAAC registered with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for Can Tho and Da Nang cities to implement the project, said UNAIDS Viet Nam Country Director Alankar Malviya.


Can Tho city has controlled the HIV/AIDS spread, lowered the annual number of HIV infected persons, deaths due to AIDS as well as discrimination against HIV/AIDS patients, Mr. Malviya added.


The city has implemented many HIV/AIDS preventive and treatment programs, including those on usage of condoms and clean syringes, methadone and ARV treatments.


To implement successfully the project in the next three years, the VAAC and UNAIDS have recently had a working session in Can Tho to evaluate the achievements, experiences and challenges in HIV/AIDS prevention, in order to help the city devise a plan to reach the project’s targets.
