(VOV) – The Vietnam Youth Theatre will stage a special performance of the Mahabharata on July 16 as part of commemorations for 2013′s Japan-Vietnam Friendship Year and the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between Japan and ASEAN.
The Mahabharata is an ancient Indian epic originally written in Sanskrit, a classical language of India. Japanese Director Hiroshi Koike was inspired to adapt it for performance because of its examination of wisdom and human nature.
The story’s characters will be portrayed by traditional Cambodian dancers, a Japanese Bali dancer and ballet dancer, and a Malaysian Butoh dancer. Masks enable each actor to take on a variety of roles in a narrative relayed through movement, music, and projected text summaries.
The Japan Foundation Centre for Culture Exchange in Vietnam hopes that Hiroshi Koike’s efforts will not only inspire Vietnamese audiences but also provoke deeper reflections on the enduring quandaries of human existence.
Free tickets are available at the Japan Foundation Centre for Culture Exchange in Vietnam (27 Quang Trung Street, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi).
