“Forest men” happy with new homes

Ho Van Loan, who lived in the forest for many years with his father, appeared happy to make a move to rejoin society by helping transport bricks meant for the construction of his new home.

After it was discovered early this month that the two men, thought to have been deceased, were living on their own in the forest around Tra Xinh Commune, the story picked up immediate attention from both media and authorities. Individuals and organisations also contributed to their rehabilitation, with a grand total of VND80 million (USD3,400) contributed.

Loan, the son, says that he would rather reintegrate to society than return to his previous existence. By all accounts, his spirits are high and he looks forward to becoming a member of the local community.

Their return has attracted interest from both local and international media organisations, affecting the quiet life the village has maintained for many years. They will benefit from some social welfare policies and be provided with regular healthcare.
