On August 12, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with the southern Kien Giang provincial People’s Committee to present the ASEAN heritage park certificate to U Minh Thuong national park.
This is Vietnam’s fifth national park recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park. The four other national parks recognized this title include Ba Be, Hoang Lien, Kon Ka Kinh and Chu Mom Ray.
According to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Cach Tuyen, U Minh Thuong national Park was recognized for its biodiversity and preservatipn by domestic and foreign experts in environment at the conference under the project on restoring and using sustainably peatland in Southeast Asia (peatland project).
At the conference, participants suggested that Vietnam should build a profile and propose U Minh Thuong national park for ASEAN heritage park status. Therefore, the Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with national technical experts from the Peatland project and U Minh Thuong national park to make the profile, which was approved as an ASEAN heritage park at the ASEAN Environment Ministers’ Meeting in September 2012.
At the certificate presenting ceremony, Deputy Minister Bui Cach Tuyen congratulated Kien Giang province and U Minh Thuong national park. He hoped that the Management Board of U Minh Thuong national park would continue to complete assigned tasks and promote the preservation of valuable natural resources at the park./.
