VGP – Viet Nam was elected Chair of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2013-2014 term at a conference on September 23 in Vienne, Austria.

Earlier, on September 19, 2013, the 57th General Conference of the IAEA elected 11 new countries to the 35-member IAEA Board of Governors for 2013-2014. The new members are Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Kenya, Peru, Qatar, Slovakia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Viet Nam.

Ambassador Nguyen Thiep, who has been elected Chairman of the Board of Governors, thanked the trust and support of IAEA members for Viet Nam.

The post has marked the maturity Viet Nam has showed at IAEA and other multilateral forums and demonstrated a breakthrough the country made in realizing its proactive international integration, he added.

He asserted that as the nuclear power program is being launched in Viet Nam, the new position will allow the country to realize IAEA’s goals and its consistent policies of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Viet Nam joined IAEA in 1978 and was elected to the Board of Governors three times (1991-1993; 1997-1999; 2003-2005).

The IAEA is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purposes, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on July 29, 1957.

The organization’s programs encourage the development of peaceful applications of nuclear technology, provide international safeguards against misuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials, and promote nuclear safety (including radiation protection) and nuclear security standards and their implementation.

The new composition of the 35-member IAEA Board meets five times a year – in March and June, twice in September (before and after the General Conference) and in December.

At its meetings, the Board examines and makes recommendations to the General Conference on the IAEA’s accounts, program, and budget and considers applications for membership. It also approves safeguards agreements and the publication of the IAEA’s safety standards and has the responsibility for appointing the Director General of the IAEA with the approval of the General Conference.
