PANO – With love and respect for General Vo Nguyen Giap who passed away on October 4th, Hospital 103 under the Military Medical Academy has been determined to learn, work and study to follow the bright example of the General.
These days, activities in the hospital have gone on as usual, however, talks and exchanges among patients and the hospital’s staff are full of sentiment, with touching stories relating to General Vo Nguyen Giap, the first Commander-in-Chief and the eldest brother of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA).
Major General, Associate Professor cum Doctor Hoang Manh An, the hospital’s director, said that upon learning about the General’s death, the hospital’s cadres, troops and staff were all stunned. They mourned over him. Apart from being a veteran revolutionary activist, General Vo Nguyen Giap was a clever commander of the VPA in the two resistance wars against foreign invaders.
Major General Hoang Manh An stressed that the death of General Vo Nguyen Giap was a great loss not only for soldiers enlisted in the army before 1975 like him, but also for those after 1975.
He recalled the first and also the last visit of General Vo Nguyen Giap to the hospital. At that time, what impressed the hospital’s staff about the General was his thoughtfulness and care for war invalids and the unit’s staff as well. Learning what specialties the hospital is good at, General Vo Nguyen Giap introduced some senior officers and well-known artists with serious illness to it for treatment.
Stories and images of General Vo Nguyen Giap helped encourage the hospital’s staff to better care for their patients, as well as improve their professionalism.
“Following the General’s bright example, we have held various activities to provide free health check-ups and medicines for needy people in remote areas and to disseminate the Party and the State’s policies to them. It is a way to express gratitude to compatriots, especially those rendering good services for national salvation”, said Major General Hoang Manh An.
Learning about the General’s death, some staff of the unit put a portrait of the General on their altar and pay respect to him at his residence at 30 Hoang Dieu Street, Hanoi.
Emphasizing General Vo Nguyen Giap’s talents, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Duc Hung from the Cardiovascular Department, said that what they have learnt from the General’s example are sincerity, simplicity and enthusiasm at work. “Remembering him, we need to try our best to study, treat patients and contribute to building a more friendly hospital for patients”, Hung said.
“We are following the General’s simplicity and approachability as ways to help us be friendlier to patients and work more effectively”, said Second Lieutenant Pham Van Bien, a non-commissioned officer.
Caring for one of her relatives at the hospital, Nguyen Thi Hang shared that she was touched and stunned on learning about General Vo Nguyen Giap’s death. Too busy taking care of her relative, she could not pay tribute to the General at his residence. However, the responsibility of military doctors and nurses here consoled her and other patients. She stressed that “soldiers and military officers have followed the good example of their eldest brother”.
