Among her children, the eldest is 24-year-old and the youngest is 3. Thanks to supports from local government, all of them are given the chance to go to primary school. But none of them continues their school after completing primary education because of poverty.

Dang Thi Hai and her husband Ngo Doan Nam, 47, together with her children get up very early every day to catch fish and snails in nearby paddy fields. In the afternoon, she brings the aquatic products to a local market for sale from which she earns about VND100,000 (roughly US$5) per day on average.

“My health is getting worse while most of our children are young. Our only dream now is to be able to borrow from VND20 to VND30 million to run a small business to feed our kids. But a dream is just a dream”, Nam lamented.

The population of Vietnam officially reached the 90 million mark on Nov. 1. Local experts said that though the country enters a ‘golden population structure’ period, many problems related to population growth need to be resolved like the high rate of literacy but very low rate of people trained in occupational skills.
