On November 12, Ms Irina Bokova has been re-elected as the Director General of the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris, France.

Irina Bokova, 61, was Bulgarian Ambassador to France and Monaco, and has been a member of the UNESCO Executive Board since 2007. She was first elected Director General of UNESCO in 2009, being the first female to head UNESCO.


In addition to her mother tongue, Ms Irina Bokova speaks English, French, Spanish and Russian. She graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations, and studied at the University of Maryland (US) and the John F. Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University). Irina Bokova joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria in 1977, where she was responsible for human rights issues.


Ms Bokova has supported UNESCO’s programme on objectives such as forging a culture of peace, promoting sustainable development and priorities to Africa, and gender equality.


UNESCO may be best known for its program to protect the world cultures via heritage sites./.
