In the morning of November 14th, Dr. Van Ngoc Thinh – Director of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Vietnam said star the species saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis) , one of the rare and endangered animal species on the planet, was recently discovered in Quang Nam province. The images of this mysterious animal were recorded via camera trap set up by WWF and Forest Protection Department of Quang Nam province in Central Truong Son.

“These are images of the most important wildlife species in Asia, possibly all over the world during 10 last years.” said William Robichaud, Coordinator of Saola Conservation Group, under Endangered Species Conservation Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature said. “They are also encouraging evidences about the effectiveness of the forest patrolling model to protect saola from the risk of extinction.”

Mr. Carsten Killlian KfW, German Government-owned Development Bank – CarBi’s sponsor confirmed “We are committed to support successful solutions for monitoring and law enforcement to ensure that the remaining saola individuals and other species have the best chance of survival. We hope that this remarkable discovery would be a pride for the conservation efforts of one of the rarest species in the world”

In the area where saola was discovered by camera traps this time, Carbon and Biodiversity Project (CarBi) of WWF has approached a new method to implement law. Patrolling team for forest protection along with forest rangers of Reserve’s Management Board should regularly remove traps and handle the cases of illegal hunting.
