Vietnam wishes to strengthen cooperation with Belgium, which has brought great economic efficiency for both countries over the past years, said Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai.

Deputy PM Hai made the statement at the reception held in Hanoi on Monday for Minister for Mobility and Public Works of the Flanders Region Hilde Crevits, during which he praised the support the Belgian regions of Flanders and Wallonia-Brussels have given to Vietnam through education and human resources training projects.

The Deputy PM said that Crevits’ visit will mark a new development in the relationship between Vietnam and Belgium, especially with Flanders. The visit falls on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, Hai added.

He called on Flanders to give assistance to Vietnam in the fields of culture, education, training, energy and the processing industry.

He also highly appreciated the construction of a tra fish entrepôt in the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, which he said will speed up Vietnamese seafood exports to European markets.

Meanwhile, Crevits affirmed that Flanders will continue to strengthen cooperation with Vietnamese localities in a wide range of spheres such as economics, society, education, science-technology and the seaport industry.

She pledged that Belgian partners will spare no effort to support Vietnam, explore local seaports’ potential, and consolidate the connection between local maritime ports and the global port system.

During the past years, Vietnam and Belgium have continuously developed the multifaceted cooperation, including trade and investment, with two-way trade in 2011 increasing by 70 percent in 2003.

The trade volume between the two countries has increased year after year and is around €1.2 billion per year.

Relations between the Flemish Region of Belgium and Vietnam have strongly increased since the late 1990′s, when the first agreement on port cooperation was signed.
