(VEN) – Vinh Long Province has achieved satisfactory results in implementing the National Target Program on New Rural Development.
Over 99 percent of households have access to electricity
The Vinh Long Department of Industry and Trade reported that so far the province had developed 62 urgent power projects with total investment of VND67 billion and installed electricity meters for 1,579 households (93.82 percent of households in the province). Currently, 99.3 percent of households in the province have access to electricity; 2,072 households still have no access to electricity and 16,225 households have no electricity meters.
Notably, 46 out of 89 communes in Vinh Long meet criteria set for electricity in new rural areas. The local power grid has been improved, contributing to boosting agricultural restructuring in the province. Power losses have decreased while the quality of power supplies has improved, facilitating production and business activities as well as service development to create more jobs for workers.
Vinh Long Province expected that by the end of 2013, an additional 28 communes would meet criteria set for electricity in new rural areas. The provincial people’s committee has provided guidelines for the rural low-voltage power grid to be upgraded and improved. The Vinh Long Power Company is striving to upgrade the local power grid to ensure that all households in the province have electricity meters.
Improving the quality of power supplies
According to the Vinh Long Department of Industry and Trade, the biggest difficulty is that rural infrastructure development requires large amounts of investment capital while it remains difficult to raise capital due to economic changes. Illegal electricity usage is still widespread, creating difficulties for power management and causing losses for farmers. To effectively implement the new rural development program, it is necessary to maintain tight links between relevant sectors as well as between local authorities and people, and at the same time it is necessary to mobilize financial contributions from businesses.
In the time to come, Vinh Long Province will continue to provide support so that an additional five communes will meet criteria set for electricity in new rural areas in 2014 and 15 communes in 2015. The safety of power supplies will be ensured. The province will also provide support for building a power grid to serve industrial and craft production. The Vinh Long Department of Industry and Trade will coordinate with the Vinh Long Power Company to survey and make assessments to build a power grid to supply electricity for 21 pumping stations to serve irrigation in the 2011-2015 period, giving a priority to communes which are developing in the form of new rural areas and craft villages./.
