BINH DINH (VNS)- The central southern province of Binh Dinh has allocated VND19.4 billion (US$900,000) from the State budget to help local residents fight against a drought that is currently crippling the area.

Some 117 out of the 161 reservoirs in the province hold a total supply of 260 million cu.m of water, with most of them containing about 60 million cu.m. In some smaller reservoirs the water level is dangerous low, the province reported.

Shortages are so critical that the Vinh Son 1 thermoelectric plant in the Vinh Thanh District, which has a total capacity of 66MW, has stopped generating power since Monday due to water insufficiency.

The production of the summer-autumn crop is forecast to be under severe threat, facing the drought and enduring continued extreme weather.

Around 33,400 hectares of fields face the possibly of becoming too damaged for rice sowing if the drought prolongs.

The province is asking for another VND110 billion ($5 million) from the Government to continue with the combat against drought.—VNS
