During the meeting, PM Nguyen Tan Dung stressed that the Vietnam – Japan relationship had developed well over the past 40 years, with its official establishment of the strategic partnership in 2009.

Japan is Vietnam’s largest provider of official development assistance (ODA), with over 30% of Vietnam’s total ODA funding, or roughly JPY200 billion each year. It is also the biggest FDI investor with over USD34.5 billion in registered capital, and Vietnam’s leading trade partner with two-way turnover of up to USD24.6 billion in 2012 and an expected amount of over USD25 billion in 2013.

The two countries have signed many important agreements, including Japan-Vietnam Economic Partnership Agreement, the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement, the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement and are negotiating to reach the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TTP).

The Vietnamese Prime Minister praised Japan’sAbenomics by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, which promotes the country’s economic development.

He also appreciated the role of Keidanren in promoting the relationship between the two countries, and encouraged more and more activities between ministries and enterprises.

He said he wanted Keidanren to work with Vietnamese ministries and agencies to implement the 5th phase of Vietnam – Japan joint initiative and industrialization strategy.

He also urged Keidanren to support Vietnam in training human resources and assist Japanese enterprises in seeking investment opportunities in Vietnam.

Keidanren President Yoneikura Hiromasa confirmed that the federation would make efforts to carry out the suggestions from the Vietnamese Prime Minister, adding that he hoped the Vietnamese Government would continue to create favourable conditions for Japanese enterprises to seek opportunities and expand investment cooperation in Vietnam in all areas, especially in areas that Japan is strong in, including energy, electronics, infrastructure construction and agricultural product processing.

Keidanren, established in May 2002, is Japan’s largest business federation, consisting of 1,603 members./.
