QUANG NAM (VNS) — Four suspects part of a 12-member ring were arrested by Provincial Police of central Quang Nam Province for using mobile phones and phone messaging applications to fraudulently elicit funds from unsuspecting victims.
The police reveled on Sunday that the scam ring was alleged to have sent messages via Viet Nam’s OTT Zalo application to inform people they had won a motorbike worth VND60million (US$2,850).
Victims were then asked to deposit VAT and other fees amounting to VND10 million ($470) by phone cards after signing up to a provided website to receive instructions.
Dozens of people were reported to have been affected by the scam.— VNS
