HA NOI (VNS) — President Truong Tan Sang yesterday asked the nation’s diplomats to continue providing strategic advice on deepening Viet Nam’s relationships with its partners.
They should also make effective contributions at regional and international forums, ensuring national interests are not compromised, he said.
Addressing the ongoing 28th Diplomatic Conference in Ha Noi, he praised the diplomatic sector for the important role it has played in maintaining the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Delegates at the conference discussed the role of the diplomatic sector in executing the country’s defence responsibilities.
President Sang asked ambassadors and heads of Vietnamese representative offices overseas to actively implement resolutions passed by the 11th National Party Congress and be flexible in the execution of diplomatic strategies.
Speaking at the conference Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh urged the diplomatic sector to co-ordinate closely with other ministries and agencies to successfully perform tasks assigned by the Party and State.
Earlier, on Wednesday, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung asked the diplomatic sector to take advantage of support from international friends to speed up the process of global integration.
Meeting with conference delegates, Hung said the nation’s representative agencies abroad should create favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to stabilise their lives and make useful contributions to the host countries.
The diplomatic sector should have a thorough grasp of the Party’s policies and resolutions on external relations and be active in reforming itself, he said.
The NA leader also urged the sector to focus on introducing the newly-amended Constitution to international friends, especially overseas Vietnamese. — VNS
