Hai Phong decreases new HIV carriers by 70%

VGP – A HIV/AIDS prevention and control project has helped increase awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention and change behaviors of the community and high-risk people in Hai Phong City.

As of July 2013, the city has had recorded more than 10,000 HIV-infected people, of whom 5,900 developed AIDS and over 7,000 are alive, accounting for 0.37% of the population.


In 2012, new HIV-infected people only numbered 324, equal to 85% in 2011 and much fewer than in 2003 when the figure was 1,570.


To reduce new HIV infections, the city actively launched the project in 62 communes and wards of eight districts. After one year, the new HIV-infected people decreased by nearly 100 compared to the previous year.


In 2013, only 278 were found positive with HIV, down nearly 70% compared to the year before realizing the project and 65 developed AIDS, much fewer than in 2005.


Since 2006, the project distributed more than 9 million syringes and nearly 3 million condoms, 90% of which has been used regularly.
