VietNamNet Bridge – Duong Van Kien, 32, a teacher of Hoang Hoa Tham high school in Da Nang city has created thousands of sculptures on pencils and entertains the idea of turning them into tourism products.

Kien was born in Da Nang, graduated in Mathematics from the Teacher Training University of Hue City. He obtained a master degree in Vinh City and became a teacher of Hoang Hoa Tham high school in Da Nang.

Over one year ago, Kien accidentally saw a pencil sculpture. He surfed the Internet to learn about the technique and began creating pencil works.

To date, he has had more than 1,000 pencil works. He presented them to his friends and students and only keeps the most satisfactory works for himself.

Besides paper knives, Kien created his own tools to make pencil works. He has taught the technique to over 50 students. “They (his students) no longer spend their free time on computer games–but making pencil artworks, which helps train the ability of concentration,” Kien said.
