The report, known as VNR500 compiled by consultancy firm Vietnam Report, lists the 500 largest companies in Vietnam by revenue in 2012.
Data shows PVN topped the list with revenue of VND772 trillion (nearly US$37 billion) in 2012.
The runners-up are the Korean-invested firm Samsung Electronics Vietnam and Petrolimex, the main distributor of oil refinery products.
According to the report, the private sector had the most enterprises included in the 500-company list, followed by the State sector and foreign-invested companies.
However, in terms of revenue, State-owned enterprises accounted for over 62% of total revenue posted by these 500 companies.
32% of the 500 companies in the VNR500 report are new companies, included for the first time, of which the majority are private enterprises.
A breakdown of the sectors shows that mining, electricity and finance generated the largest revenue with 33.6%, 14.5% and 12.3%, respectively.
Companies in the fields of mechanics, electricity and food processing had the highest return on equity, the report also details.
In a separate survey by Vietnam Report, most chief executive officers said they are upbeat about the economy in 2014 with 83.6% expecting higher income than the previous year.
