The urban systems of 63 provinces, cities, especially localities were strongly affected by climate change that must implement measures to respond to this phenomenon.
Prime Minister approved the project “Development of Vietnam urban cities respond to climate change period 2013 – 2020″. The project will be implemented in the period from now to 2020, vision after 2020. Specifically, phase I (from 2013-2015) in 6 cities, including Ho Chi Minh ciity, Hanoi, Can Tho, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Ca Mau.
Phase II (from 2016-2020) will implement in 35 cities in which 24 cities are under 15 provinces in the northern coastal region, central coastal region and Mekong Delta; 11 cities of 10 provinces belong to northern mountainous and Central Highlands region.
The period after 2020, the project will implement urban coastal system, plains at risk of floods and the urban system that have affected high risk of floods and landslides in northern mountainous areas, central coastal region, Southeast and Central Highlands.
The project will focus on the investigation, assessment and localization of areas at risk of the effects of climate change; calculating ability and degree of adaptation, proposing response measures; forming database system and warning map system for climate change risks in the urban areas.
Thence, forming control system, limitation of floods in the urban areas; forming reservoirs to regulate floods, clearing, dredging, rehabilitation, reinforcement, regulation of drainage system in the urban regions.
