PANO – Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and officer Dang Quoc Khanh from Military Zone 9 and Nghe An Border Guard Command, respectively, entered a list of the top 10 most outstanding youths in Vietnam in 2013.
The list of the top ten, selected from over 121 entries nominated by agencies and organizations nationwide, was announced on March 19th to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the country.
The award ceremony will take place in Hanoi on March 21st.
PANO would like to introduce the ten winners:
1. In 2013, swimmer, non-commissioned Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, from the Defence Sporting Centre 4 under Military Zone 9, bagged 39 medals, bringing her total medal count to 144, including 85 golds, 45 silvers and 12 bronzes.
Vien started bringing fame to the Fatherland by unexpectedly claiming two silvers at the 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley categories at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.
In 2012, she passed the Olympic B standard for the 200m backstroke event with a time of 2’13”66 and then gained a gold at the Southeast Asian Swimming Tournament. Since then, local fans called her “the little mermaid”.
In March 2013, the teenage swimmer won 2 golds and 3 silvers at the South Florida swimming tourney in the US and gained entry to the Barcelona World Swimming Championships in August.
In June 2013, she claimed 14 medals and broke 7 records at the Southeast Asian Age Groups Swimming Tournament. At the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar, Vien pocketed 6 medals and broke 2 records in the 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley categories.
2. Non-commissioned Senior Lieutenant Dang Quoc Khanh is Deputy Head of the Drug-related Crime Investigation Team under the Hanh Dich Border Post of the Nghe An provincial Border Guard Command.
Khanh and his comrades discovered and crushed many cases of drug and human trafficking. Especially, last year, they broke 3 big drug trafficking cases to arrest 5 suspects and capture 1,440 grams of heroin and some related objects.
For these achievements, Khanh was conferred the “Determined to win” title in four consecutive years from 2010 and other certificates by the higher levels. In 2013, Khanh got two merit certificates by the Ministry of National Defence.
Khanh shared that to fulfil tasks, it was essential to win people’s trust and to mobilize them to take part in the fight against the crime.
3. Captain Mai Hoang, born in 1979, is now Deputy Head of the Van Ho district Police Department in Son La province.
In 2012 and 2013, he worked with relevant agencies to break many criminal cases, contributing to maintaining social order.
Last year, he received a Third-class Feat of Arm Order by the State President and a merit certificate by the Minister of Public and Security.
4. As. Prof. and Dr. Le Anh Vinh was born in 1983 and is working at the Science and External Affairs Department of the Education University under the Hanoi National University.
Previously, he won a gold in Asia-Pacific Maths Olympiad and a silver in the International Olympiad in 2001.
Vinh won a doctorate degree from Harvard University at the age of 27, and then became the youngest person in Vietnam to get the As. Prof. title in 2013. He had about 35 articles published in international scientific magazines.
Besides, he also got the first prize at the category for young lecturers at the 2012 Vietnam Young Science Talent Award, an award for young scientists by the Hanoi National University and a Creative Youth Award insignia, and was among the top 10 “most outstanding young citizens” in Hanoi last year.
5. Bui Quang Tu is a student at the Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted High School. In 2012, he ranked second at the National Physics Competition, and then bagged two golds at the Asian and International Physics Olympiads in 2013.
He got merit certificates for his outstanding academic records by the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.
6. Nguyen Duong Kim Hao is a sixth grader at Ho Chi Minh City-based Nguyen Gia Thieu Secondary School.
Hao created a smart control panel when he was at grade 5. This software program allows people to control the on/off switch of every electronic system in a house, company or factory when they are out of the room. The program won a special prize of the Korea Invention Academy and two gold prizes of Malaysia and Indonesia at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2013.
Hao has been also awarded many international creative prizes and was honoured to be the typical young citizen of Ho Chi Minh City in 2013.
7. Born in 1980, Lai Van Diep, is now the director of the Handicapped Fine Arts Wooden Furniture Co. Ltd in Vu Ninh commune, Kien Xuong district, Thai Binh Province. Being a person with disabilities, Diep has braved his disadvantages to set up a company and provide stable jobs for 30 labourers, half of them are handicapped or victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin.
In 2012, he was among 10 typical citizens of Kien Xuong district, won the Luong Dinh Cua Award and a merit certificate of the Ministry of Labour, War-invalids and Social Affairs.
8. As an engineer of the PTSC Geos and Subsea Services Co. Ltd. under the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), Mai Van Phuong, born in 1982, is among the first 20 Vietnamese chief engineers selected to work on the first seismic survey vessel of Vietnam, named Binh Minh 02.
Phuong has had many initiatives to enable the company to earn additional 900,000 USD per year. Last year, he was titled “The Good Young Labourer of the Whole Nation“.
9. Aged 29, Nguyen Sy Luan, Director of Hanoi-based Binh Minh Development Joint Stock Company, is a billionaire farmer. He is running a 70,000 sq.m farm with the annual turnover of 3 billion VND and with 45 regular labourers.
In 2012, he was honoured as a good example in doing business by the Hanoi Youth Union Organization and last year, he won the Luong Dinh Cua Award and the title “Advanced youth following Uncle Ho’s teaching“.
10. Born into a musical family, Nguyen Dang Quang, aged 26, is studying piano at the National Conservatory.
Quang topped Table B in the category of piano for under 15 at the 13th Val Todone International Music Competition in Italy and won a gold and special prize at the Cheonan Music Festival in the Republic of Korea.
