PANO – Major General Vu Quoc Binh, Director of the Military Medical Department, on March 20th chaired the 2014 Whole-Army Blood Transfusion Safety Workshop in the central city of Da Nang.
The two-day workshop reviews blood transfusion safety in the army over the past time and is working out orientations for the time to come.
Officials in charge of blood test and transfusion of military hospitals will be provided with new circulars and regulations on blood transfusion of the Health Ministry, as well as discuss blood transfusion safety with other experts in the army, the Health Ministry and from the US.
Under statistics from the Central Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, about 10 per cent of the annually donated blood contains contagious germs, including HIV. Besides, some medical equipment and shortage of regulations on blood transfusion badly impact blood transfusion safety.
The workshop, jointly organized the Military Medical Department under the Ministry of National Defence and the US Department of Defence (DOD)/the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), is a good chance to raise awareness about safe blood transfusion to ensure safety for both blood donors and patients.
