Vietnamese chess player wins 2014 Int’l HDBank competition crown

PANO – Vietnamese chess grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son claimed the championship of the 2014 HDBank International Open Chess Tournament for the first time and pocketed a prize of US$ 12,000 in cash.

At his final match on March 15th, Son drew to his Chinese rival Ni Hua after only 23 moves to become the new champion of this tourney with totally 7 points.


Super grandmaster cum defending champion Le Quang Liem and Singaporean athlete Zhang Zhong ranked second.


Meanwhile, player Muminova Nafisa from Uzbekistan won the cup in the women’s category with 5.5 points.


Under the Swiss system with nine games, this year’s tournament took place in Ho Chi Minh City between March 10th and 15th with the participation of 91 chess players from 16 countries worldwide.
