In life, there are not a few children suffering from congenital heart diseases and these children are mostly born into particularly poor families. With each heart operation costing from 50 million to 100 million dongs, after a couple of times in and out of hospital, the parents have to resort to waiting for “a miracle“. The plan recently released by the PPC as to implement the Decision numbered 55a/QD-TTg by the Prime Minister on the policy to support congenitally heart diseases is considered a rescue for these families.

To create favorable conditions in helping these children, in the past years, Phu Yen department of labor-war invalids-social affairs has coordinated with the Medicine Sector to invite doctors from HCMC hospitals taking the functions of heart operation to come to Phu Yen to conduct medical check-up, on average, each year more than 100 children assigned for operation. Phu Yen department of labor-war invalids-social affairs only supports and helps the children suffering from this disease but born into poor families. Some families with financial conditions take the children to the hospitals in HCMC or HueCentralHospital for operation. The remaining cases are unable of affording the operation costs ranging from 50 million to 100 million dongs (excluding the traveling and nurturing expenditure during the operation time as well as the re-check after operation).

From 2004 to now, the provincial fund for supporting children has supported heart operation for 474 children with the total amount of nearly 19 billion dongs. Most of the children who underwent operation have come back to normal lives. In the whole province, annually there are more than 10 children suffering from inborn heart diseases, which means lots of children still need healthy hearts to continue their lives…Mr. Vo Van Binh, deputy director of Phu Yen department of labor-war invalids-social affairs, lets known: as to the report of the localities, the number of annual cases of children suffering from congenital heart diseases is more or less than 100, with 70% coming from either poor or nearly poor families. These children have not yet got access to the services of heart operation cost, also, traveling is a difficult factor. Every year, the department of labor-war invalids-social affairs coordinates with the functional authorities to seek for support sources in parallel with coordinating with TamDucHeartHospital in HCMC to provide medical checkup and heart operation for poor children.

As to the PPC’s plan, during the two years of 2014 and 2015, each year, the province strives to support heart operation for 50 poor children suffering from congenital heart diseases; or children from families that get monthly social subsidy.
