Two boys and a girl drowned while bathing in a river in Hanoi on Thursday, news website Dan Tri reported.
The accident happened at around 2:30pm in a rural village in Hoai Duc District’s Van Con Commune.
A group of four boys aged 6-11 and an eight-year-old girl, all related, walked to the Day River to bathe.
Do Dang Truong and Do Dang Son, both 10, and Do Thi Hong, 8, reportedly slipped into a deep-water section and drowned.
Truong and Hong were siblings; Son was their cousin.
When nearby residents heard the screams, they rushed to the river, but only managed to fish out Truong’s body.
The families of Hong and Son hired divers with fishing nets to search for their bodies all night long, but it wasn’t until 6am Friday that the two bodies were recovered.
Drowning incidents are reported quite frequently in Vietnam, especially in rural areas, during summer.
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs announced on Monday that the country sees an average of nine fatal child drownings a day, the highest rate in Southeast Asia and 10 times that of developed countries.
