(CPV) – In the first five months of this year, total trade turnover through border gates in the northern province of Lao Cai reached USD652 million, a year-on-year decrease of 22%, according to the provincial Department of Customs.
Of this figure, export turnover posted USD405 million, down 4.7% over a year earlier and imports were valued at USD247 million, down 22.6% over the previous year. The main drivers were a reduction in ore export quotas and imports of commodities such as vegetables, machinery and equipment, and fertilizer. In addition, frequent traffic jams on Highway 70 narrowed export and import activities compared to the same period last year.
Deputy Head of the Lao Cai Customs Department, Pham Ngoc Thach, said that commodity import and export activities through border gates in Lao Cai are very busy, mainly because of close and effective cooperation between relevant agencies and border gate management members. In particular, from May 8th, the department applied automatic custom clearance for commodities, helping to reduce custom clearance time to one third./.
