The authorities of Kien Giang has recently established a task force in charge of attracting investors and developing projects on the island after Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung approved establishment of a Vietnam-Singapore industrial park on the island.

The province has allocated nearly 3,870 hectares in Cua Duong and Cuu Van communes to Becamex IDC in preparation for a complex comprising a township, an environmentally-friendly industrial park for high-tech applications, tourism and trade facilities, and a casino.

In the period, the province has publicized a detailed 1/2000 scale zoning plan for an extra 139 hectares on Phu Quoc, bringing the total zoned area on the island to 9,840 hectares, or 99.7% of the target.

To attract more investors, Kien Giang Province’s chairman Le Van Thi said the province has sped up work on major infrastructure projects on the island. Contractors have completed more than 70% of a 51.5-kilometer-long, north-south road costing over VND2.4 trillion and 34% of a belt road with investment capital of nearly VND3 trillion.

Work is also progressing smoothly on other projects to upgrade An Thoi Port and Duong Dong reservoir, dredge the mouth of Duong Dong River, and a water supply project on Phu Quoc.

In the coming time, an agency for investment promotion activities in the province will further introduce incentives for investors in Phu Quoc to boost development of the island. In addition, this agency will help investors complete investment procedures and preparations for their projects to get off the ground.

The province has programs to call for Singaporean companies to invest in eco-tourism sites, urban areas and high-tech industrial zones on Phu Quoc Island.

Phu Quoc has attracted nearly 300,000 visitors in the year to date, an increase of 30% compared to the same period last year.
