With a marine area of 52,000 square kilometres, Binh Thuan has managed to develop a strong marine economy such as effective aquaculture farming and seafood processing; marine tourism; and coastal mineral exploitation. Binh Thuan is putting its best efforts into become a strong maritime province.
Binh Thuan has a coastline of 192 kilometres including Phu Quy Island group with the largest Phu Quy Island having the area of 18 square kilometres. The fishery has developed for years in the province, especially in some localities such as Tuy Phong, Phan Thiet, La Gi, Phu Quy; forming unique fishery traditions and culture.
With the territorial waters of 52,000 square kilometres, Binh Thuan is one of three major fishing grounds of the country. According to the survey, the provincial fisheries resources are quite rich in terms of species, particularly there are over 500 kinds of fish, including 60 species with high economic value such as red snapper, mackerel, grouper, tuna and many types of seafood such as shrimp, scallops, oysters and so on. The total marine fish stock in the area (within 50 metres of water from the shore) is 220,000-240,000 tonnes, the capability of exploitation is 100,000 tonnes – 120,000 tonnes/ year. Binh Thuan sea adjacent to large fishing grounds nationwide such as the Southeast fisheries; Truong Sa area – DK I. The coastal areas of the province are also home to several species of bivalve molluscs having high economic value such as hair oysters – hardly found in other coastal areas of Vietnam with the output ranging from 20,000-40,000 tonnes per year. Besides, Binh Thuan, with less fluctuating salinity, stable high temperature and high water quality, has various advantages for the development of seafood products.
With a long coastline, clean water, many untouched areas with vivid landscapes, islands, biological diversity reserve, Binh Thuan, in recent years, has become a tourist destination home and abroad.
Besides, the province has been exploiting potentials of oil and gas with great efficiency. In addition to those advantages, Binh Thuan also has abundant and diverse mineral resources, especially titanium mineral sand in the range of coastal dunes – strength of the province.
With favourable natural conditions for island economy, Binh Thuan have determined directions and objectives of maritime economic development from now to 2020, in which focusing on strengthening all sectors such as economy, society, science and technology, reinforcing national defence and security, firmly protecting sovereignty, security and island waters, making Binh Thuan province a rich and powerful marine economy. Moreover, the province also oriented the maritime economy as the driving force of the provincial economy, having a decisive role in the economic growth of the province. GDP growth of marine economy is 1.15 – 1.2 times higher than the overall provincial GDP in the period 2013-2015 and 1.25 – 1.3 times in the period 2016-2020; GDP of the entire marine economy in the provincial economy is around 38-40 percent in 2015 and around 50-55 percent in 2020, contributing 75 – 80 percent to the provincial export value and 80-85 percent to the total provincial budget.
Regarding specific roadmap, Binh Thuan focuses on the construction and modernization of maritime economic infrastructure including sea-port system, in which particularly concentrating on the sea-port serving for thermo-electric centres, service port of marine industry, coastal traffic network and domestic networks, airports, sea tourism infrastructure. The province formed and developed key marine economic industries and products to motivate the growth and accelerate the economic restructuring of the coastal areas and Binh Thuạn Province. In addition, the province also focuses on establishing coastal urban areas, industrial parks and coastal resorts; promotes economic development in the sea and island in Phu Quy Island district, and builds Phu Quy into a strong maritime economic zone.
