Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung last Sunday approved the allocation of VND3 trillion ($142.9 million) from Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans through the Support Programme to Respond to Climate Change in Viet Nam next year. Of the 16 projects, priority will be given to the planting of mangrove forests and protective forests at riverheads as well as one on building dykes.

Seniors to get specialised healthcare
A network of hospitals and wards specialising in healthcare for seniors has been completed, according to the Ministry of Health. The country now has four hospital in charge of serving seniors. Of the country’s total 58 provinces and five cities (HCM City, Ha Noi, Da Nang, Hai Phong and Can Tho), 46 have set up a geriatric ward at their general hospitals. More than two million seniors have received periodic check-ups.

City helps Agent Orange victims
The HCM City Association for Victims of Agent Orange gave a total of more than VND8.6 billion (US$409, 523) from 2009 to 2013. The funds helped 28 families build or upgrade houses. Scholarships were also provided to students and health care was given to 250 victims. The association is now carrying out a project to build a rehabilitation centre and provide vocational training to Agent Orange victims in the city’s outlying district of Hoc Mon, with total capital of VND100 billion ($4.8 million).

City urges stable daycare fees
Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam, the chairwoman of HCM City People’s Council, last Sunday asked local districts to encourage owners of private kindergartens and family-based daycare facilities to not increase caretaking fees. The city is planning to allocate funds to build kindergartens at industrial parks and export processing zones in districts with a high population, she said.
“It is very important that there not be a shortage of kindergartens for workers. They are now facing high fees charged by private daycare facilities,” she said.

Binh Duong builds dorms for workers
In the southern province of Binh Duong, 230 enterprises have built dormitories for hundreds of workers with a total area of 300,000 sq.m, according to the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs. Moreover, enterprises have provided an allowance of VND50,000-200,000 per worker each month to rent rooms. Other enterprises have signed with families to lease rooms near their company.
