AAG cable system map
Nhan Dan Online – The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) underwater cable system has been damaged for a second time within two months, causing a slowdown in internet connection from Vietnam to foreign web services.
According to the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), the AAG section linking Vietnam and Hong Kong was found broken around 23:00 hours on September 15, at a point near Hong Kong.
VNPT said the incident had reduced Vietnam’s internet bandwidth to Hong Kong and the United States by 40% and the company was working with AAG administrators on the plan to repair the cable.
It had to re-route its traffic to the SMW-3 cable system and other terrestrial cables to ensure its customers will be least affected by the incident.
FPT Telecom said the repair would take longer than usual, as Typhoon Kalmaegi was causing bad weather in Hong Kong.
The most recent cable damage was on July 15, which took nearly two weeks for the repair to be completed.
